COURSE STRUCTURE
Purpose / aim
Vaccinator training courses are designed to train and up-skill authorised vaccinators
e.g. Registered Nurse and Registered Midwives, to a level that meets the:
a) “Guidelines for the Training of Non-medical Vaccinators” 1992 Department of
Health
b) “Standards for Immunisation Providers (Vaccinators)” Appendix 3, page 397:
Immunisation Handbook 2006, Ministry of Health
Learning outcomes
At the end of the session participants will be able to:
§ Understand the impact vaccination has made on work populations and New
Zealand health
§ Describe individuals or groups in their community with a low immunisation
uptake rate.
§ Outline the historical impact of colonisation on Maori Health.
§ Connect current health policies to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
§ Link Te Tiriti o Waitangi to current vaccination practices.

§ Describe the values and systems integral to a healthy Maori society.
§ Understand the disease process.
§ Understand the potential complications for the diseases that vaccines protect
against at a level appropriate to their employment.
§ Describe the structure of the immune system in basic terms.
§ Describe active immunity.
§ Describe passive immunity.
§ Describes the immune response to a vaccination course or series – at a level
appropriate to their qualifications and employment.
§ Describe the composition of the vaccines in the current National Immunisation
Schedule.
§ Understand the current immunisation schedule.
§ Have a basic understanding of the implications of the legislation listed on
vaccination and their role as immunisation information sharers.
§ Understand the informed consent process.
§ Assist clients to make informed choices regarding vaccination

Workload 1. Theory: 2 days. Some essential pre-course
reading will be required as well as some
'homework' between Day 1 and Day 2.
2. Test: 1 hour - open book – 2006 Immunisation
Handbook only. Participants can negotiate with a
course facilitator for an oral examination in English
or Te Reo. Speakers of English as a second
language can be allowed extra time if needed.
3. Clinical Assessment: A course facilitator will
assess each participant doing 2 vaccinations. One
on one mentoring prior to the clinical assessment
is offered for new vaccinators.

Requirements to pass A certificate will be issued on successful completion
of all components of the course.
