This document provides an overview of the main policy initiatives and outputs resulting from the work
of the European Commission in the field of education and training since the Lisbon European Council
in March 2000. These form part of the integrated policy framework ‘Education & Training 2010’ and

Expert networks in economic and social sciences
European Expert Network on Economics of Education (EENEE)
EENEE advises the Commission on the analysis of economic and social aspects of education and
training policies. EENEE also organises, on behalf of the Commission, symposia to encourage further
exchanges between policy-makers and researchers and to draw out promising proposals for the
development of human capital policies. The website of EENEE has become the main forum to
promote and disseminate research on the Economics of Education in Europe.

The Network of Experts on Social Sciences of Education and Training (NESSE)
NESSE is a network of internationally-known researchers working on social aspects of education and
training with whom the Commission is working closely since early 2007. The network advises and
supports the Commission in the analysis of education policies and reforms and of their implications for
future policy development at national and European level. The Institut National de Recherche
Pédagogique is responsible for the coordination of the network.
